Walker Promotes CDC Suggestions on Talking with Children about COVID-19

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – As the COVID-19 health situation provides new challenges for parents, state Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, is encouraging families to check out recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on how parents can talk with their children about the coronavirus.

“This is a scary and frustrating time for all of us, and there can be additional challenges for children,” Walker said. “It’s important to be on the lookout for signs of stress and anxiety, and I hope that parents take the time to review resources on how best to communicate with their kids.”

The CDC has created an online resource page that provides messaging ideas for parents, school staff and others working with children. It emphasizes the importance trusted adults can play in helping a child understand what is happening, as well as strategies to minimize anxiety. The CDC also provides guidance on how to make sure your child learns everyday actions to limit the spread of germs. An additional CDC webpage gives examples of behavior changes parents should be on alert for.

“The stress of this public health situation can wear on anyone over a long period of time,” Walker said. “I hope that families are staying safe and are remaining vigilant to ensure that everyone stays as healthy and in good spirits as possible.”
